Bolton Withdraws From UN Nomination Amid Opposition
Topics: Political News and commentariesIn what is most definitely against the interests of both the U.S. and the UN, John Bolton is stepping down in the face of Democratic opposition and weak-kneed, ill-informed, self-serving Republicans:
Dec. 4 (Bloomberg) - John Bolton will step down this month as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, conceding that his nomination to continue in the post was unlikely to overcome Democratic opposition in the Senate.Riehl World View agrees that having Bolton out of the UN is a bad move: "Very disappointing. Freaking Dems and half-hearted Republicans will be the ruin of this nation."White House spokeswoman Dana Perino, on a conference call with reporters, said President George W. Bush ``reluctantly accepted'' Bolton's decision to withdraw his name from consideration. Bush will appear later today with Bolton at the White House, she said.
Bush issued a statement accusing a ``handful'' of senators of blocking Bolton from getting a Senate confirmation vote, ``even though he enjoys majority support in the Senate, and even though their tactics will disrupt our diplomatic work at a sensitive and important time.''
Powerline writes that It's a sad day for U.S. foreign policy, and not the last one, with the Democrats now resurgent.
To Powerline's and RWV's remarks, I would add that the Bolton resignation is but a harbinger of many changes forced by the Democrats that will ultimately result in significant damage to our national security and ability to defend ourselves against the threats we now face.
