Ted Haggard was Fired

Topics: Political News and commentaries

The independent board acted quickly:

In the wake of accusations by a former male escort that the Rev. Ted Haggard had a three-year sexual relationship with him, an independent oversight board at Mr. Haggard's New Life Church found that he had "committed sexually immoral conduct" on Saturday and dismissed him as senior pastor.

"In consultation with leading evangelicals and experts familiar with the type of behavior Pastor Haggard has demonstrated, we have decided that the most positive and productive direction for our church is his dismissal," the statement said. "Pastor Haggard and his wife have been informed of this decision. They have agreed as well that he should be dismissed."

Despite maintaining his innocence, Haggard agreed with the decision:
Associate Pastor Rob Brendle, in his first interview following the dismissal, told ABC News that he was disheartened by the news, but added he would continue to support his mentor and friend. When asked to explain why Haggard maintained his innocence for the past few days but now accepted his dismissal, Brendle was hard pressed to answer.
Previously Brendle told CNN that the church has openly gay members. Consequently,
Brendle said he sees no hypocrisy in Haggard's actions. "To my knowledge, Mike Jones [the gay prostitute] has not alleged that Ted asked him to marry him... No, I do not see this instance as hypocrisy. I do see it as indiscretion, and I am grateful that Ted is repentant and humble."
Brendle's dilemma is founded in the fact that Haggard has admitted he bought methamphetamine -- but did not take the drug -- and sought and received a massage from Jones -- but nothing more (video here).

And, in an interview (see below) prior to his resignation Haggard denied even knowing his accuser (yes, it's possible he didn't realize ....) And, contrary to Brendle's comments, Haggard denies knowing openly gay parishioners (he's in a big church ...).

The situation is simply a mess and one for Haggard's church, and possibly civil authorities, to sort ought. Given the circumstances, the independent board did the right thing, choosing the obvious and honorable route to take. I do feel great sympathy for Haggard's family and friends and hope that through this crisis they will find comfort in the Lord despite the fall of the man they loved and respected.
