On Iraq's Version of 'Playing Chicken'

Jules Crittenden writes at BostonGlobe.com that Moqtada al-Sadr and al-Maliki have had their fun, and time is overdue for their little game of chicken to end.

... So there's the dilemma. A thug who knows how to play chicken; an insecure leader looking to his own future; together boosting the now well-demonstrated risk of open Sunni-Shiite war. What to do? With or without al-Maliki's cooperation, call Moqtada al-Sadr in his game of chicken. Provoke a fight with his forces, and destroy them.

... Iran and its proxies must be shown they cannot call the tune in Iraq. Iraqi politicians, as veteran survivors, must be shown that pandering to murderers is not a viable route to securing their own futures.

Now, in the deadly game of power politics in Iraq, the US needs to make its move.
