Los Angeles Federal Judge Rules To Support Financial Assistance To Terrorist Groups

Topics: War on Terror

Perhaps the title here isn't exactly the wording of the ruling, but that's exactly the affect of the ruling.

Los Angeles federal judge Audrey B. Collins, a Clinton appointee (of course), has ruled that key portions of a presidential order blocking financial assistance to terrorist groups are unconstitutional, in yet another example of judges complicating the Bush administration's attempts to defend Americans from radical Islamic terrorism. Of course, the WaPo, phrases this fact quite diferently, saying "complicating the Bush administration's attempts to defend its aggressive anti-terrorism tactics in federal courts" (a different slant, a different nuance):

U.S. District Judge Audrey B. Collins, in a ruling released late Monday, found that two provisions of an executive order signed Sept. 23, 2001, are impermissibly vague because they allow the president to unilaterally designate organizations as terrorist groups and broadly prohibit association with such groups.

The ruling marks a victory for the Humanitarian Law Project and other plaintiffs in the case, who are seeking to provide support for the "lawful, nonviolent activities" of two groups designated terrorist organizations by the U.S. government: the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in Turkey and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), also known as the Tamil Tigers, in Sri Lanka.

Judge Collins is the same judge that back in 2005 struck down a section of the law that prohibits anyone from providing "expert advice or assistance" to any group that the US State Department decides to place on its list of "terrorist organizations."

Terrorists heart8.gif American federal judges appointed by Democrats, especially Clinton appointees.

Jay at Stop The ACLU has more on Judge al-Collins and particularly her cheering section:

The ruling is praised by a lawyer for terrorist sympathizing, Center For Constitutional Rights! The Center for Constitutional Rights is openly anti-American and pro-terrorist. Groups suspected of ties to terrorism give money to CCR. The granddaughter of the executed Communist spies Julius and Ethel Rosenberg works there! At its 2004 annual convention, the CCR honored attorney Lynne Stewart, an open supporter of terrorism, indicted by the Justice Department for abetting the terrorist activities of her client, the "blind sheik," Omar Abdel Rahman.
