Employing The Vietnam Model - Baker Commission Flirting With Disaster In Iraq

Topics: Iraq

According to James Lewis at The American Thinker, the Baker commission seems to be doing a lot more than just re-thinking Iraq, and appears to be "copiously leaking a Vietnam-type cut-and-run plan that will leave the Gulf far more dangerous than it is now." As he points out in his short piece, acquiescing in a disastrous retreat from Iraq would be the worst of all possible worlds, and would empower all the most destabilizing actors in the region - like Ahmadinejad, his dangerous guru Ayatollah Yazdi, and Moqtada el Sadr, who wants to turn Iraq into another Khomeinist state.

... Withdrawal would embolden Hamas and Hezbollah and weaken Iran's natural enemies--the Sunni Arab countries, including the Sunni Gulf states. In Afghanistan, the Taliban would be reinvigorated, and in Pakistan the Al-Qaida-supporting elements in the military and secret services might try--again--to launch a coup. A successful Al Qaida coup in Pakistan would give Islamofascists not just one, but two nuclear-armed states.

... The Vietnam model looks like a "face-saving" retreat by the United States--just like that one that left Vietnam a Stalinist prison state with tens of thousands of boat people fleeing and dying, and next door in Cambodia, two or three million dead at the hands of Pol Pot.

.... The US held on in Vietnam for fourteen years. We gave Vietnamization a chance. The 12 million Iraqis who voted for parliamentary parties deserve a chance to see their elected government work.

I don't know about the rest of my fellow Americans, but although I'd like to see the Iraqi people fair a hell of a lot better than the South Vietnamese did when we left them stranded and at the Mercy of the VC and the N. Vietnamese, I care a hell of a lot more about America and American troops. Pulling us out of Iraq too early virtually assures that more U.S. forces will die in future confrontations with the Islamonuts because of their having been emboldened by the great satan's timidity and through their to-be newly acquired base for spreading jihadism all over the world. If you think one Iran is bad enough, just think what two will be like.

Bad enough that the American voters have handed the terrorists a huge victory, the consequences of giving the Islamists Iraq will have even greater repercussions - ones that we are certain to feel on American soil.
