Democrats take control of the Senate

Topics: Political News and commentaries

The final count is in and the Democrats have taken control of the Senate from Republicans with an upset victory in Virginia, giving them complete domination of Capitol Hill for the first time since 1994.

To put all that's happened into perspective, we can do so with two comments. Captain Ed writes that the dissipation is now complete:

This puts an exclamation point on the dissipation of Republican rule in Congress. This makes the last two years of the Bush administration especially tricky, but not just for Bush. The narrow 51-49 margin will make it difficult to pursue any partisan initiatives. Even with the House in Democratic hands, the Senate has to gain a consensus of 60 in order to get anything done, a reality Republicans repeatedly discovered during the last four years.

Don't expect great programs out of Congress. Divided government tends to do less, not more, and tends to react even more slowly than normal. The Bush administration should be prepared to work with Democrats on their agenda, but that doesn't mean capitulating on every issue. We will have to remain vigilant in vetting proposals and watching appropriations to ensure that we contain the excesses of Democratic redistribution plans while the Republicans try to rediscover their limited-government, reform-minded platform all over again.

And then there's Pajamas Media with:
Speaker-elect Nancy Pelosi on Iraq: "The point is this isn't a war to win, it's a situation to solve. And you define 'winning' any way you want, but you must solve this problem." California Conservative watches the interview and concludes, "We're doomed."

And we may indeed be just that - doomed. Should the Democrats play to their base, America could end up suffering very dire consequences for having been so naive as to swallow the liberal Democratic spin machine's lines. Looking at the optimistic side, if the Democrats do play to their base Americans are more likely to make sure there's a Republican in the White House in 08. The question is how much damage done by the Democrats between now and then could be overcome when there's an ongoing world war with radical Islam going on that the Democrats don't even recognize.

None of this sounds promising - it sounds an awful lot like Abdul's predictions could turn out to be true. We've made a very stupid move, America.

Addendum via Opinion Journal:

In Tuesday's exit polls, for all of their other woes, Republicans still had an advantage over Democrats of seven percentage points as the party more likely to keep the country safer from terrorism. Since this threat isn't going away, Democrats won't help their image going into 2008 by opposing warrantless wiretaps against al Qaeda or the rest of the antiwar agenda. They would be smarter to make themselves partners in giving institutional permanence to Mr. Bush's best post-9/11 policies.

All told, the Republicans deserved the electoral drubbing they received. Democrats will now have to prove they deserved the majority that GOP failure has handed them.

Republicans indeed deserved the electoral drubbing they received, but America deserves much more than a knee jerk response that hands worldwide terrorism a present that essentially invites the world to a disaster party (pun intended).
