The Foley Story Is 'Getting Wierd'

Topics: Political News and commentaries

Borrowing from the way Charles at Little Green Footballs phrases it, the Mark Foley story is weird and getting wierder, and although there doesn't seem to be any doubt that Foley's guilty of making advances to teenage boys (he did resign!) - there's something very odd about the email messages being circulated by media and left wing blogs.

Let's be clear here, no one is defending Foley's "sicko actions," or suggesting that he has done anything less than dispicable; it's just that there appears to be "some serious questions that need to be answered about this story." As for my sentiments on the entire issue, I found Michelle Malkin's statement to be both appropriate and dead on target:

Disgraced GOP Rep. Mark Foley's instant messages with an underage page are absolutely appalling. He was a 54-year-old man abusing his position of power with a 16-year-old boy. Based on all the reporting so far, and there may yet be more to come, Rep. Foley was exactly the kind of sexual predator--"sicko," in his own words--he crusaded against in Congress. Alcoholism seems the least of his problems.
And also:
"Rep. Foley's apparent abuse of office and lecherous communications with a 16-year-old boy -- during what should have been one of the best times in his life as a page in Washington -- is every parent's worst nightmare," she wrote. "It happens to both boys and girls, and all parents must be vigilant and immunize their children against predators early and often."
More at Blue Crab Boulevard's, "A Question Of Timing, Part Two," Flopping Aces' "Foleygate Has Begun" and Michelle Malkin's "Predators in the House."

You can see how differently folks in red and blue America see the world by looking at a summary of the blogs that are covering the Foley scandel - here.

Why are the Democrats so up in arms over this Republican Congressman's action? As I recall, the entire Democratic Party in Congress, both US Senate and US House of Representatives, supported former Democrat President Billy "I didn't have sex with that woman" Clinton from any wrongdoing in his lewd affair with a junior staff member.

Are the Republican Congressman's emails more deplorable than former Democrat President Billy "I didn't have sex with that woman" Clinton's innovative use of cigars in the Oval Office? Was it the absence of cocaine-adulterated semen in the Republican Congressman's emails that cause the ado with the Democratic Party?

To me, the Democratic Party set the standard for sexual conduct in elected office many years ago in the manner in which they defended former Democrat President Billy "I didn't have sex with that woman" Clinton.

So what's the problem?

The Republican Congressman didn't send the boy a box of cigars in order to acquire the right fit?

The Democratic Party members have to be held liable for their actions. The Democratic Party set the precedence ... not the Republicans.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (Oct. 3) - Disgraced former Rep. Mark Foley said through his lawyer Tuesday that he was sexually abused by a clergyman as a teenager, but accepts full responsibility for sending salacious computer messages to teenage male pages.

Attorney David Roth said Foley was molested between ages 13 and 15 by a clergyman. He declined to identify the clergyman or the church, but Foley is Roman Catholic.

He also acknowledged for the first time that the former congressman is gay, saying the disclosure was part of his client's "recovery."

Mark Foley wants you to know he is a gay man," Roth told reporters in Florida as Republicans struggled to avoid election-year fallout from the congressman's behavior and sudden resignation.

Foley represented parts of Palm Beach County for 12 years until he abruptly resigned Friday after being accused of sending lurid Internet messages to teenage boys who served as pages on Capitol Hill. The FBI and Florida law enforcement officials are investigating whether he violated any laws.

The lawyer said Foley, who is now in treatment for alcohol abuse, never had any inappropriate sexual contact with a minor. He said Foley was under the influence of alcohol when he sent the e-mails and instant messages.

"As is so often the case with victims of abuse, Mark advises that he kept his shame to himself for almost 40 years," Roth said.

Foley announced in a statement Sunday that he had checked into a facility to be treated for "alcoholism and other behavioral problems."

Roth said Foley never had any sexual contact with minors.

"There was absolutely no inappropriate sexual contact with any minor ... and any suggestion that Mark Foley is a pedophile is false," he said, adding that Foley never even attempted to have sexual relations with the teens.

Asked whether Foley was suicidal, Roth said, "I am not concerned about that at all."

"I was advised by his doctor that despite obvious pressure and the trauma of what he has gone through as a result of the revelations that he has determined to be completely inappropriate and inexcusable that he is not in danger of hurting himself," Roth said.

Comment: This reads like a never ending story.

Age of Consent in Louisiana is 17. I believe the reports indicated that the Congressional page from Louisiana was 16.
