On The Decline Of Married Households And The Decline Of America

Topics: Political News and commentaries

The word from the New York Times is that married households have fallen below 50%, and they seem to think that's a good thing.

While, Dan at Digger's Realm is quick to distance himself from saying that the decline of America is related to fewer couples getting married, and even more so from ""right wing nut-jobs" who see marriage as the end all and be all of a successful person or couple," he does associate the decline of married couples with children, with an increase in generally misbehaved kids who are getting themselves into things that could have been avoided by having a two parent household. Dan goes on to suggest that while the New York Times seems to trumpet the decline in marriage "as some sort of accomplishment," he finds it just a further warning of the decline of America.

Although Dan and I have disagreed on some things from time to time, I consider him to be a friend, a good blogger, and both a rational and reasonable fellow, and in this case, I find us in agreement from different perspectives. BTW, I'm glad that Dan wrote the post first because he's bound to catch more flack than me - and it's always nice to have someone else take much of the heat for saying something you yourself believe should be stated.

While I wouldn't put myself all the way in the camp of the "'right-wing nut jobs' who see marriage as the end all and be all of a successful person or couple," I would include myself in the camp of the "right wing nut jobs" that believe that a successful marriage offers the best environment for rearing children, and even more so if the environment includes a relationship with a faith community. Yes, there are indeed many children that grow up in single parent families that do not have behavior problems, and that grow up to be successful, productive, and responsible adults. But more and more, this situation appears to be the exception rather than the rule. As Dan puts it:

Beyond the typical stated conditions of being a bad apple - teen pregnancy, juvenile hall, prison, drug use, alcohol use, vandalism, gangs and other assorted illegal activity - you have to take a look at the general state of the youth. They are being thrust through our schools without proper education in order for them to graduate. They are not being supported by role models or mentors or anyone looking out for their best interests. They are not being properly prepared for the realities of life by being coddled by the politically correct crowd all these years.

This is the first generation that has grown up with overly heavy political correct bullshit shoved down their throats at every turn. 16-year-olds today were born in 1990.

And I think he's right on. Check out the rest of his commentary here. And remember, even though I agree with him, Dan opened the bucket of worms, so raise hell with him if you disagree. I get beat up enough by the Islamists and the whacky Left.
