'Islamo-skepticism' Fuels Bans Of Muslim Veils Across Europe

Topics: War on Terror

mn_headscarf_2.jpg"Long and short, sober black and brightly hued, the Muslim veil is drawing growing criticism in much of Europe. It has been chased from public schools in France and Belgium, and its strictest, face-concealing variation, the niqab, has been outlawed in a smattering of European towns. "

As one Belgium mayor puts it, "If you're in Europe, you need to live according to European customs. Either you adapt or, if you want to wear Middle Eastern clothing, you leave" - and that's the view of Khadija Khali, head of a French Muslim women's group, a practicing Muslim who has gone to Mecca five times, and does not wear a veil. The issue of the niqab is moving to the forefront throughout Europe and elsewhere in Western nations, from the Netherlands, Denmark, France, and Germany in Europe and even Australia. The longer the cultural dissonance generated by 9/11, the "war on terror," and suicide attacks ensues, the harder it is getting to ignore the semidetached status of Muslim communities.

Although it is clear that there are Muslims who want to assimilate into Western culture rather than change it, unfortunately, there are many Muslims that see things differently (no pun intended here, but in fact, peering through slits or a screen covering your face does literally "alter" your view - albeit one has to have a political or ideological disconnect from to want to wear one).

Related: The niqab is not only stirring a controversy in the UK, it is also doing so in Egypt.
