Arizona's Janet Napolitano Supports Driver's Licenses for Illegals
Topics: Political News and commentariesNine months after taking office in 2003, Democratic Gov. Janet Napolitano said she would sign a bill giving driver's licenses to undocumented immigrants. One problem among many with this position is that a driver's license is the main source of identification needed to travel freely within the United States, Board an airplane and come and go between the United States and Canada or Mexico.
Len Munsil, the Republican candidate for Governor, has made this a campaign point, writing,
I think it is "horrifying" that the Governor of our state, less than two years after 9-11, would think so little of our security that she would "happily" sign a bill that would make it easier for potential terrorists to rent cars and board airplanes.He's right. Hani Hanjour, one of the 9-11 terrorists, had an Arizona drivers' license.
Rather than recanting her 2003 position, Napolitano's campaign issued an ad hominem attack on Munsil's campaign:
Jeanine L'Ecuyer, spokeswoman for Democratic Gov. Janet Napolitano, denounced the mailer as "a horrifying attack on a candidate by a guy who's desperately trying to scrounge together votes."This is not only wrong, it's horrifying. For Munsil to put his name on such a piece is to show what kind of governor he would be: reckless and unqualified."
Napolitano's response is consistent with her visionless campaign strategy which lacks a specific agenda for the future and relies on the satisfaction of Arizona voters rather than her positions and plans. This is the "keep your head low because I want to be governor" approach. It would seem Napolitano's desire for political success is built on the equity of the past and the hard work of Arizona's citizens and not advancing an agenda for the future.
