On Learning From Mistakes In Iraq
Topics: IraqClifford May says that yes, Americans have soured on this war, but he suspects that most Americans don't want to "cut and run" - nor do they want to merely "stay the course" - what they really want is what they thought they had: a military and intelligence machine capable of defeating America's enemies, whoever they are, wherever they are.
And that's not a mission impossible, although it will require learning from mistakes.
It's a worthy, common sense read. I particularly endorse his suggestion that Syrian and Iranian intervention in Iraq should have been dealt with - not by denunciations, rather by consequences unpleasant enough to make the meddling stop. It's not too late to make additional "coarse corrections," and dealing with Syrian and Iranian interference in Iraq would be a damned good begining, and would go a long way toward stabilizing Iraq.
