Berlin Opera Company Drops 'Beheaded Prophet' Opera

Topics: Dhimmitude

idomeneoweb.jpgA Berlin opera company has cancelled a Mozart production over security fears because it features the severed heads of the Prophet Muhammad, Buddha, and Jesus (however, from the article it is clear that their security concerns are related o-n-l-y to Muhammad). The opera was previously staged in Berlin in 2003 (and for over two hundred years previously by various opera companies), and drew criticism over a scene where the king presents the heads of Greek sea god Poseidon, Muhammad, Jesus and Buddha. Now, with fears of Muslim violence, such as with the case of the Danish cartoons, the opera company considers the risks "incalculable"":

[...] Deutsche Oper said "incalculable" security risks would be posed by staging Idomeneo.

"We know the consequences of the conflict over the (Muhammad) caricatures," the opera company said in a statement.

"We believe that needs to be taken very seriously and hope for your support."

The director, Kirsten Harms, said security officials had now warned of possible problems if the production went ahead, and that it was in the best interests of performers and opera-goers to cancel it.

[...] 'On the offensive'

But Berlin's mayor, Klaus Wowereit, said the director had made the wrong decision to scrap the production.

"Our ideas about openness, tolerance and freedom must be lived out on the offensive," he told the Associated Press.

"Voluntary self-limitation gives those who fight against our values a confirmation in advance that we will not stand behind them."

Germany's interior minister called the cancellation "unacceptable"

Germany's Islamic Council leader, Ali Kizilkaya, supported the cancellation, saying the Muhammad depiction could offend.

"Nevertheless, of course I think it is horrible that one has to be afraid," he told Berlin's Radio Multikulti.

"That is not the right way to open dialogue."

Note that there is no concerns expressed for the Greek sea god Poseidon, Jesus or Buddha, only from the followers of what is rapidly becoming known as the religion of perpetual outrage and intolerance.

As FrauBudgie said at Redstate of the Muslim outrage over the Pope's recent remarks, her very same point also applies here in the case of the German opera:

The next step is for these "moderate" Muslims to solemnly condemn the violence (churches were firebombed all over the West Bank) while piously calling for "dialogue" and "understanding." And sure enough, the guilt tripping west will meekly obey, taking part in high profile meetings with local Muslim leaders who will chide the west for their "ignorance" and demand special considerations for the Muslim community. The fact that these "considerations" are designed to further isolate Muslims from the rest of western society thus increasing the power and influence of the Muslim leadership is the ultimate goal of these "moderates."

It's nothing less than a con game and we should be on to these grifters by now. Unfortunately, the "moderates" know exactly which buttons to push in order to increase their status as victims in the eyes of guilt ridden western liberals while feeding their anti-religious bias against the Pope. Comparing Benedict to Mussolini and Hitler is about as absurd as it gets and yet, the charge resonates with many on the European left who see the conservative Pontiff and the papacy in general as holdovers from a time when religious wars racked the continent. Certainty about right and wrong behavior or who is good and who is evil as expressed by the Pope and the Catholic church smacks of anti-modernism where it is preferred that relativism be substituted for the moral certitudes found emanating from the Vatican.

If "moderate Muslims" truly wanted dialogue, we'd be seeing and hearing less protesting and a hell of a lot more dialogue, which isn't the case. Igumen Filaret wrote of Muslims' lack of any real intent for "dialogue" (ed: read as protest and violence being agenda-driven rather than interest in meaningful dialogue) The Moscow Times, in his piece "Dialogue or Protests":
Approaching interfaith dialogue with the goal of finding opportunities for harmonious relations, it is necessary to recognize the rights of your partner in the discussion to express his or her convictions and remain him or herself. Without respect for the opinions of others, even if they don't coincide with your own, both dialogue and the hoped for result -- mutual understanding -- are impossible.

If the Muslim world really wants to be understood and heard in Europe and the Christian world as a whole, it has to do its part in building the road to extending dialogue.

Hurried and sharp reactions to statements made in the course of discussion, particularly in discussions about complex questions on which there is little agreement, can't be allowed.

And therein lies the problem - the Muslim world is not willing to its part in building the road to extending dialogue, and it is unwilling to bring a halt to hurried and sharp reactions to statements made in the course of discussion or, in the case of the German opera Idomeneo, a cultural event that opened back on the 29th of January, 1781 - at the Hoftheater in Munich (it's been around and has been part of the German cultural landscape for over two hundred years).

What we are seeing in Berlin is yet another instance at Muslims pursuing power and influence rather than dialogue, tolerance of the existing culture, and free speech. After all, can we blame them? What else should we expect when the West continues to simply roll over and die?

Other coverage: Politically Incorrect, and if Islamists disapprove of the opera, they'rer going to really go nuts over the images. The text is in German, but the images communicate the blogger's message.
