What's The Deal With The U.S. - France Peace Deal?

Topics: Middle East News and Perspectives

One has to wonder what's with the sudden lovefest between the U.S. and France. As Jules Crittenden at BostonHerald.com frames it, "With the joint French-U.S. draft resolution now circulating at the U.N. Security Council, France has taken a responsible position that respects Israel's security needs and has come under fire from Lebanon, Syria and Iran." Why now? Crittenden offers an explanation:

Over the past year France, in taking a responsible position on Iran's nuclear weapons program, has encountered the irrationality of the mullahs. It has learned that today, nations face a choice of acting for stability, law and order, or siding with terrorism and the prospect nuclear-armed extremists who overtly state they want to kill all Jews. We will see which way France breaks in the coming days. We will see how far the Bush administration is willing to go to keep Europe involved.

What diplomatic game is the United States playing as it enters this strange partnership with France?

So, is it a case of "Don't throw me into that briar patch" or "Give 'em enough rope" ? Maybe the U.S. is simply giving France another chance to play a responsible role in the world. Read more and find out.
