UN Lebanon Force A Farce - As For France, Well, It's FranceTopics: Middle East News and Perspectives
Posted for Tommy.
When Hezbollah is meeting the Lebanese Army with warm welcomes, you know they aren't going to do anything to disarm Hezbollah:
Can we simply admit that the spirit of the ceasefire is dead already? Can we admit that nobody is going to disarm Hezbollah? Can we face reality?
Currently, it looks like the UN resolution's major accomplishment will be preventing Hezbollah from openly parading their weapons around (Don't show - don't tell). If that is the best the United Nations can do, I think it is time for the United States to drop out of the UN altogether. The UN ought to relocate to Tehran, Beijing, Havana, or Beirut - some city that speaks more to the UN's true nature than New York.
And the French may only contribute a few hundred troops to this "effort" (remember that the French were going to "lead" the force - before they surrendered that idea before they the first troop was sent). Supposedly, the Germans are wimping out also. At this rate, Kofi's prediction that it could take up to a year to get 15,000 UN troops in place might be optimistic. And what for?
Ace has some good commentary on the French offer to "lead" UN forces. Check out the comments section - Evil Chihuahua had a good one.

Sometimes the French become a parody of themselves, I swear. ... Jacques Chirac has managed, single handedly, to again make the French appear as a country that should never be taken seriously when it tries to play with the big boys...
