President Bush Addresses American Legion National Convention
Topics: War on TerrorImportant speech - you'll find it here.
Redstate offers that the themes will be familiar to those who have followed the progress of the GWOT, although they'll be new to the likes of Reid, Pelosi, Kennedy, and Durbin who insist on claiming the Administration has no strategy. (a concise summary of the important points).
Rich Lowry says that In general, it was very strong, and was one of the most rhetorically effective defenses of the Iraq war recently. Lowry goes on to point out passages that he says should be remembered by every Republican candidate in the country that set out the stakes in Iraq and end with a rousing riff centered on that other very important word, "victory":
... we should all agree that the battle for Iraq is now central to the ideological struggle of the 21st century. We will not allow the terrorists to dictate the future of this century -- so we will defeat them in Iraq.See all his points here.... If America were to pull out before Iraq can defend itself, the consequences would be absolutely predictable -- and absolutely disastrous.
... We can decide to stop fighting the terrorists in Iraq and other parts of the world, but they will not decide to stop fighting us.
As you'd expect, the Leftist response at the HuffPost is just another, "Bush Lies, Again." These people just don't get it and never will. But we love them anyway because without them, we'd actually believe that all of human kind actually had common sense. They help those of us that are wide awake appreciate the fact that we aren't going through life sleepwalking.
As President Bush pointed out in his speech, "the war we fight today is more than a military conflict; it is the decisive ideological struggle of the 21st century." We can pretend it isn't there, but unfortunately, such delusions won't make it go away. We have no choice but to engage it with all our ability and resources, and win.
