Syrian-based Hamas Chief Claims To Be Spokesman For Palestinian People - Not Those Democratically ElectedTopics: Middle East News and Perspectives
In a speech yesterday, Khaled Meshal, the Damascus-based head of Hamas' political bureau, reiterated the Hamas promise not to hurt Shalit and the position that he would be released only in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners held in Israel. However, of significance is his statement declaring that he and not the chairman of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, in Ramallah, or Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh in Gaza, is the sole spokesman for the Palestinian people in the territories and beyond. He actually declared that the road to a future military or diplomatic agreement goes through his Damascus office, making him more vulnerable to an Israeli assassination attempt because, in effect, he has made clear his connection to the kidnapping of the Israeli soldiers.
Meshal's statements also connect Syria directly to the kidnapping, since without Syria's approval, Meshal couldn't remain in the country nor could he operate with impunity.
