The "vague ultimatum" from Palestinian Hamas terrorists holding Corporal Gilad Shalit has passed without incident. The Palestinian Islamic terrorists had set a 6 a.m. deadline for Israel to begin releasing Palestinian prisoners, or they would not reveal any further information about Corporal Gilad Shalit, 19, held since June 25.
After the deadline expired, an Israeli spokesman said that he believed Shalit was still alive. The interior minister, Roni Bar-On, warned Hamas on Israel Radio that if the soldier is harmed or killed, "the sky will fall on them."Israel has "suggested" it would assassinate leaders of Hamas if Shalit is not freed. - and are likely to hit "everyone responsible" including Hamas leaders in Syria.
Hamas sources said Western diplomats, whom they did not name, had told the group that Israel had prepared a 13-man hit list headed by exiled leader Khaled Meshaal and including Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh and Foreign Minister Mahmoud al-Zahar.
