More On The Two Missing Soldiers In Iraq (Update)

Topics: Iraq

The NYT has more on the two soldiers, missing from a checkpoint in Iraq, now determined to be abducted .

"Ahmed Khalaf Falah, a farmer, said three Humvees were manning a checkpoint when they came under fire from many directions. Two of the vehicles went after the assailants, but the third was ambushed before it could move, he told The Associated Press." ... Seven masked gunmen, including one with what he described as a heavy machine gun, killed the driver of the third vehicle, then took the two other U.S. soldiers captive, the witness said.
You'll find that Iraq the Model has some very good observations on the problem with static checkpoints.

From the very moment they were announced, I had reservations of repeating the same mistakes made in previous crackdowns, and have never understood the use of predominantly static checkpoints without significant backup immediately available and an equal emphasis on roving checkpoints.
