Darfur: the Situation So Far (Update)
Topics: Darfur
Negligently, on my part, my last post on Darfur - 'Genocide in Slow Motion', was back in February of this year. So when I received an email Friday from Drima, a blogger who is from Sudan but is now living in Malaysia, I meant to put this link up then but somehow failed to get back to it. It offers some interesting insight on the conflict, and asks some tough questions.
The ongoing human tragedy of Darfur needs our attention, and Drima at The Sudanese Thinker gives us "the situation, so far."
Update: I failed to mention in my initial post here that Drima's email offered additional input: "it's important for the public to know the truth. Afterall how can you solve a problem if you don't understand it first. Most people call it a genocide when it really isn't. There were already problems amongst tribes in the Darfur region since decades ago. Many of the problems back then had to do mainly with water. Darfur now is mainly about the imbalance of power and wealth sharing. The media simply portrays the conflict as good VS bad and in the case the Sudanese government being the bad guy. While the Sudanese government is ultimately responsible, people must know that the rebels have also committed atrocities. The tribal mentality of the people in the conflict is not taken into account. Furthermore many people are basing their interventionist ideas on a macro analysis rather than a micro analysis."

A split in the rebel movement has transformed Darfur's civil war. The battle-lines in this conflict, which has forced at least two million people to flee their homes and claimed up to 300,000 lives, either through violence or disease, were once easy to describe. The insurgents, drawn largely from Darfur's black African tribes, fought against Sudan's Arab-dominated regime and its notorious "Janjaweed" militias.
Today, by contrast, most of the fighting is taking place within the SLA. Clashes between rival factions account for the great majority of the 50 incidents recorded by the United Nations in the largest of Darfur's three provinces since May 1
