Canadian Terrorist Suspects Tied to Mosque

Topics: Understanding Islam

untitrtled-vi.jpegWhy am I not surprised:

Several of the men arrested in the bombing plot against the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) are tied to Canada's Ar-Rahman Islamic Centre. Qayyum Abdul Jamal, who was one of the arrested, is said to be one of the mosque's Imams (religious leaders). Canadian authorities uncovered the plot, which involved the attempted purchase of 3 tons of ammonium nitrate.

The Chronicle Herald reports that there was a struggle over leadership at the Ar-Rahman Islamic Centre and that the Islamic fundamentalist element won out over Muslim moderates. It is then that Qayyum Abdul Jamal is said to have taken part in its leadership.

Further, the Toronto Star reports that one of the mosque members said many of the men arrested in connection with the bombing plot began as peaceful middle-class youths and wrote: "Six of the men arrested in Friday's anti-terrorism sweep were among those who spent time with Jamal at the centre and hung on his every word."

And to go along with my lack of surprise on the terrorists' frequent mosque attendence is the existance of a study on the psychology of suicide terrorism, and the psychoanalytic roots of Islamic terrorism. After all, if docs can dream up a psychological basis for road rage, I've little doubt that they can come up with some excuses for a theopolitical cult run completely amuck.

If Islam is not the problem, what is? Are we not inviting self-defeat by refusing to recognize that Islam is at least part of the problem?
