Canada's Captured Terrorists Want Special Treatment

Topics: Understanding Islam

The Canadian government is experiencing the same "nitpicking" from the same kind of Riiehl World View refers to as "sniveling twits" like the Bush administration has had to contend with, people who would have us fight a war on terror with a kid glove on one hand and the other tied behind our collective back. In other words, the Muslims that were caught red-handed in planning acts of terrorism in Canada and elsewhere are, via their attorneys, wanting special treatment because "they are Muslims":

Tiny solitary cells under constant illumination, a mere 20 minutes of fresh air daily, and beatings at the hands of guards are indicative of the "torture" endured by some of the 17 people accused of plotting terrorist attacks in Canada, lawyers for the group said Monday.

The allegations of "cruel and unusual punishment" came as the court imposed a blanket publication ban on the legal proceedings, preventing the public from learning of any further evidence in a case of stunning allegations that has captured headlines around the world.

The treatment of the suspects, accused of plotting a number of terrorist strikes in Ontario that allegedly included bombings and taking senior politicians hostage, "constitutes torture," lawyer Rocco Galati said outside the court.

"That torture includes being kept in a room that's lit 24 hours a day, being woken up every half-hour, being beaten by the guards, on and on and on," said Galati, who represents Ahmad Mustafa Ghany, a 21-year-old health sciences graduate of McMaster University.

The solitary confinement cells in which the men and youths are housed at the Maplehurst Correctional Complex in Milton are a scant 3.4 metres by 1.8 metres, are sealed by a concrete door with only a small slit for meal delivery, and have no windows, said lawyer David Kolinsky.

Twenty-year-old terror suspect Zakaria Amara was beaten by a guard after he giggled because he felt ticklish while being searched, alleged Kolinsky, who said the guard pinned his client to the ground, drilled his knuckle into the man's cheek and said, "Is this funny?""

According to Community Safety and Correctional Services Ministry spokeswoman Julia Noonan, most of the conditions that the terrorists' lawyers complain about are standard practice:
"All our institutions are lit 24 hours a day," said Noonan, who added the lights are dimmed in the evenings. "For security reasons, we need to ensure that proper supervision is possible.
First of all, we're talking about people that are planning to deny possibly thousands of people their right to live, and for that they think that being a Muslim is suppose to give them special treatment in jail. Are their attorneys mindful of the fact that those cells were constructed not just for their clients, but for ALL prisoners? The food they are fed is fed to ALL prisoners, the lighting is for ALL prisoners, and NO prisoners are afforded a special right to "pray" (read plot) together (as they have previously demanded), and ALL prisoners are given the same time each day for fresh air.

What in the hell is special about being a Muslim, especially a Muslim terrorist? Any a--hat that doesn't have a mind of his own and is deranged enough to believe that radical Islamic "Allah said" crap can be a terrorist. Nothing special about that!

So which privileges should be afforded Islam? Daniel Pipes notes that throughout the West, Muslims are making new and assertive demands, and in some cases challenging the very premises of European and North American life. So how are we to respond to such demands? Here is a general rule: Offer full rights - but turn down demands for special privileges:

The key distinction is whether Muslim aspirations fit into an existing framework or not. Where they do, they can be accommodated, such as in the case of:

* Schools and universities closing for the Eid al-Adha holidays.
* Male employees permitted to wear beards in New Jersey.
* The founding of an Islamic cemetery in Tennessee.

Adherents of other minority religions may get a holiday off, wear beards, or dispose of their dead in private burial grounds - so why not Muslims?

In contrast, special privileges for Islam and Muslims are unacceptable, such as:

* Setting up a government advisory board uniquely for Muslims in America.
* Permitting Muslim-only living quarters or events in America and Great Britain.
* Setting aside bathing at a municipal swimming pool for women-only, as in France.
* Banning Hindus and Jews from a jury hearing a case about an Islamist in Great Britain.
* Changing noise laws to broadcast the adhan, or call to prayer, in Hamtramck, Mich.
* Allowing a prisoner the unheard-of right to avoid strip-searches in New York State.
* Exploiting taxpayer-funded schools and airwaves to convert non-Muslims in America.
* Allowing students in taxpayer-funded schools to use empty classrooms for prayers in New Jersey.
* Deeming the "religious vilification" of Islam to be illegal in Australia.
* Punishing anti-Islamic views with court-mandated indoctrination by an Islamist in Canada.
* Prohibiting families from sending pork or pork by-products to American soldiers serving in Iraq.
* Requiring that female American soldiers in Saudi Arabia wear American government-issued abayas, or head-to-foot robes.
* Applying the "Rushdie rules" - or letting Muslims shut down criticism of Islam and Muslims.

The dividing line in each instance of Muslim's claims of discrimination and special treatment is whether Muslims accept to fit the existing order or aspire to remake it. Working within the system is fine, taking it over or changing it especially for them is not. In American (and Canadian) terms, Muslims must accept the framework of the Constitution, not overturn it.
This approach implies that Muslim demands must be judged against prior actions and current practice, and not in the abstract. Context is all-important.
Most pertinent to the jailed Canadian Muslims is that providing prisoners, jailed for terrorism or any other charge, special privileges because they are Muslims - that is unacceptable!

It's become SOP for Islamists to claim discrimination whenever they are caught with their hands in the proverbial cookie jar. Islamist groups like CAIR and others always look for issues that afford them an opportunity to push for special treatment of followers of their version of Islam. These guys are spinning, and I hope to God that no one's listening!
