The Wrong Man At CIA?
Topics: Political News and commentariesIf Gen. Michael Hayden intends to appoint former operations chief Stephen R. Kappes as deputy director of the CIA, the Bush administration is making a big mistake.
Kappes' nomination by Hayden sends a clear message that the administration has abandoned its efforts to reform a dysfunctional agency that has been at war against the administration from it's inception and has shown that he is resistant to needed reforms.
Related: On the positive side, Kappes speaks Russian and Persian - good timing when Russia and Iran seem to be conspiring to have Iran get its way with the development of nuclear weapons. This amidst the views of some critics, including Representative Peter Hoekstra, (R - Michigan), chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, that have portrayed his return as a victory for a hidebound CIA bureaucracy that resists change.
