Saudi King Places More Restrictions On Women

Topics: Saudi Arabia

Pictures of Women? Letting women vote and drive? Unspeakable blasphemy!

King Abdullah has told Saudi editors to stop publishing pictures of women because they could "lead young men astray".

[...] The king told editors on Monday night that publishing a woman's picture was inappropriate.

"One must think, 'do they want their daughter, their sister, or their wife to appear in this way?' Of course, no one would accept this" ...

"The youth are driven by emotion ... and sometimes they can be led astray. So, please, try to cut down on this," he said.

Apparently the King (or his cleric handlers) is upset that newspapers have also started publishing a range of views on causes that are not generally accepted in Saudi Arabia - like women having the right to drive and vote.

Women driving and voting? Sinfull, sinfull, sinfull - the Kingdom's going to hell in a handbasket!

Egyptian Sandmonkey has the links and more on the story.

One can't help but wonder why it is that "With exploding populations, and offering little hope for either material security or personal freedom, unelected governments in the Gulf, Egypt, and northern Africa have allowed their press the single "freedom" of venting popular frustration against a very successful Israel and the United States."
