Sami al-Arian Gets Jail Before Getting "Go" Pass Out Of Country

Topics: Terrorism

sami-al-arian.jpg Former Florida university professor Sami al-Arian was sentenced to four years and nine months in prison today for aiding the Palestinian group Islamic Jihad. He gets 57 months in prison (less 38 months for time served = 19 months) before being kicked out of the U.S.

It was not certain where al-Arian will be sent when he is deported. His parents are Palestinians but he was born in Kuwait and grew up in Egypt.

In his ruling, Moody harshly criticized al-Arian for doing nothing to stop bombings perpetrated by Islamic Jihad.

"You lifted not one finger. To the contrary, you laughed when you heard of the bombings," he said.

... "You are a master manipulator. The evidence is clear in this case. You were a leader of the PIJ."

In a brief statement before he was sentenced, al-Arian praised the U.S. justice system and said he was grateful for the opportunities America had provided his family. Apparently his appreciation of America didn't have much of an effect on his support of Palestinian Islamic Jihad and terrorism. But why should it when even the U.S. government is apparently on both sides of the issue of terrorism. It's actually funding one of al-Arian's biggest supporters.
Last month, the State Department dispatched its head of counterterrorism, Ambassador Hank Crumpton, to be the keynote speaker at a conference co-sponsored by one of al-Arian's former principal funders, the International Institute for Islamic Thought (IIIT). And for good measure, the Defense Department largely paid for the event.

Confused? Don't be - as this article reports, recent history suggests that some precepts may not reflect the realities of modern international politics or the way the United States or other nations actually practice diplomacy. This is the case even though such a practice is counter-productive when dealing with Islamists - because for them - lying and cheating is just another strategy in their global jihad. Our government still "just doesn't get it". They fail to understand the Islamists use of the Muslim concept of Al-Taqiya, a concept Sami Al-Arian well understood and used to his advantage - until finally, even the U.S. government was able to catch-on to his lies, half-truths, and distortions of the truth.

Deportation is designed to displace the threat, but it may ultimately create a host of other challenges for the West in Muslim countries and ultimately on its own territory.
