Patrick Kennedy - A 'Case' Study With What's Wrong With Washington (And America)

From the fancy heading here, you're probably expecting a bunch of long drawn-out sophisticated psycho-babble or socioeconomic dribble, forget it, it doesn't take much to nail what's wrong with America - it's a lack of character (as in moral or ethical strength) and and unwillingness to demand the best from our leaders and representatives.
For example, let's take a look at a guy that has been repeatedly voted into office, and remains today:
(...) Kennedy said today that he was seeking treatment for addiction to prescription medicines after he crashed his car into a traffic barrier on Capitol Hill.Help me out here, what am I missing? Do the voters of Rhode Island really want a guy with a history of drug and alcohol abuse, who suffers from depression, and has long exhibited a pattern of behavior that is abusive to others, making decisions for them in Washington? Are the citizens of Rhode Island nuts? And Kennedy isn't a hell of a lot different than a lot of others that the rest of us continue to allow to represent us!(...) he acknowledged today that he has had past problems with drugs. He said he felt the need to "speak honestly and openly about the challenge I have with addiction and depression."
(...) Although Mr. Kennedy said today that he could not remember the crash, he issued a statement on Thursday night explaining the incident.
(...) Mr. Kennedy said he had "struggled" with the conditions "since I was a young man." He said he had been treated at the clinic over the Christmas holidays for "addiction to prescription pain medication"
(...) Mr. Kennedy spent time at a drug rehabilitation clinic before he attended Providence College in Rhode Island.
(...) In March 2000, he shoved an airport security guard in Los Angeles, an incident for which he later apologized. He has also been served with several damage claims by owners of sailboats he has chartered and damaged.
The guy is nothing more than a bum in dress-up.
Whatever happened to expecting people who represent us to be "of fine and upright character" and to stand for something besides being rich, spoiled, and have a family name that's a household word and a history of being rich as hell and just as addicted?
What's wrong with America is personified by Patrick Kennedy and his ilk and Americans like you and me that sit back and take this crap - ordinary people like you and me that voted for this bastard who has long-exhibited a complete lack of character and respect for his fellow citizens, or the rules and laws within which the rest of must live.
And now Americans from the same pool of soft, gullible, weak-kneed, gutless Americans that essentially said to the only guy prosecuted and found guilty in the 9/11 slaughter of thousands that gee golly gee you had a terrible childhood - we'll pay for all your expenses for the rest of your natural life, are probably going to suck up the touchy feely dribble handed out by Kennedy and his handlers.
That's a lack of character, we're all just about as bad for putting up with it, and that's why America is having so much trouble finding the guts and collective will to win the war on terror. We don't stand for a damned thing anymore. Patrick Kennedy knows it, his handlers know it, the rest of the politicians know it, and since character doesn't mean anything anymore he'll probably go through the exercise of going through the show of "rehab", and then simply come back and continue on as he always has done.
Why? Because he can! And his gutless, characterless, constituents will simply swallow the touchy feely crap - and vote him in again.
