Iraqi Army Has Big Catch

Topics: Iraq

Amidst all the bad news in Iraq lately, it's nice to have a bit of good news, especially when it involves the capture of a senior aide of al Qaeda leader in Iraq Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. No surprise on where he was found though, the thug was captured in Baghdad:

Defence Ministry spokesman Kassim al-Mosawi said that Kassim al-Ani, one of the most wanted people in Iraq, was arrested on Sunday evening.

"The Iraqi army forces arrested three terrorists who belong to al Qaeda, one of them is a senior aide of Zarqawi in Baghdad," Mosawi said.

"He was one of the most wanted ones," he told Reuters, adding that Ani was suspected of being behind many attacks in the Iraqi capital.

Zarqawi and al Qaeda have been blamed for some of the deadliest attacks in Iraq since 2003, often going after Shi'ite Muslim targets in what U.S. officials say is an attempt to provoke civil war with Iraq's once-dominant Sunni Arab minority.

Another news item that caught my eye this morning was that the top American commander in Iraq has decided to move reserve troops now deployed in Kuwait into the volatile Anbar Province in western Iraq to help put down the increase of "insurgent" (read terrorist thug) attacks. I can't help but wonder why we haven't moved into Anbar province with 5 times the force already there, and shut the place down. Anbar is "Islamoterrorist City, Iraq" - and should have been shut down with overwhelming and disproportionate force long ago.

What ever happened to our use of the "overwhelming and disproportionate to the force used by the enemy" element of the Powell doctrine? The Sunni terrorists respect only force and strength, and until we recognize that, we'll continue to see an increase of terrorism in Iraq. They do it because they can, and they can because our policy there facilitates a condition that allows it. Anbar needs to have been cleaned out long ago!
