Happening Right Now - The trapped miners are free
Topics:I am watching the TV with tears streaming down my eyes because Brant Webb and Todd Russell have been rescued and they have emerged from the mine. As I sit here the men have been taken into the ambulances that have been on hand and they are now on their way to the hospital.
These truly amazing men walked out from the mine after having been trapped in the cage for 14 days, and they walked into the ambulances that were waiting for them. I saw them pick up hold and cuddle their children. They are smiling and they are in good spirits.
Thank God that they are safe, in good health and are free.
The funeral of Larry Knight, the miner who was killed will be held today. The family had been holding off because of the rescue efforts that were taking place and they felt that they could not hold off any longer. Larry was only 44 years old.
The other news from Launceston is the death of 60 Minutes reporter Richard Carleton. He died of a heart attack on Sunday as he was attending a press conference and asking a difficult question.
This rescue has never been attempted before. They used a boring machine that had never been used to dig in at an angle of about 2 degrees before. The last phase of the rescue, the miners had to use specially made tools as they carved through hard rock. The men retained their good spirits after it was discovered that they were alive. The medical team and the rescue teams have worked so hard for this rescue.
I have just listened to the press statement of the mine manager, Matthew Gill. He has stated that his knees are still shaking as they had emerged from the mine. The best news to date has been that at the end there was less rock to break than they expected.
