Exemplary Model Of Islamic Moderation Jails Editors For Publishing Mohammad Cartoons

Topics: Understanding Islam

Two editors of a Jordanian newspaper have been sentenced to jail for publishing cartoons depicting Mohammad who Muslims claim to be their "Prophet". As pointed out at Jawa Report (which offers several comments on the matter that would get them jailed, lashed or killed in Islamic countries), Jordan is held out to be a model "moderate" Islamic country, and in comparison to most Islamic countries, Jordan is indeed "moderate".

However, that Jordan is what passes for moderation in the Islamic world speaks to how little freedom of the press exists in Islamic countries - especially when it jails editors for publishing cartoons, even those depicting cartoons of Mohammad. Freedom of the press and speech is essential to a free and open society, of which the Islamic societies are most definately not.

Recently, a bloc representing the world's Islamic nations marked World Press Freedom Day by calling for urgent action to establish international law or a code of conduct aimed at preventing media from "defaming religion" - and of course the one their most concerned about and that they speak of - is Islam. The bloc that called for "urgent action to establish international law or a code of conduct aimed at preventing media from "defaming religion"" is the Saudi-based secretariat of the 57-member Organization of the Islamic Conference.

Note that the Saudi's, and we can assume their "secretariat of the 57-member Organization of the Islamic Conference", apparently have no problem with what happens to the rights of those of a faith other than Islam, as evidenced by the fact that back in November 2005, a Saudi court sentenced a teacher to 40 months in prison and 750 lashes for "mocking religion" after he "discussed the Bible and praised Jews".

So much for moderation, freedom of speech, and regard for "defaming" religion. Unless of course - putting someone in prison for 40 months and giving them 750 lashes is an example of "respecting" other faiths and their right to express it!

On the other hand, we in the West, for now, have the right to express ourselves and pubish the expressions of others - which we do!
