Breath Of Life: A New Diagnostic Technique
Topics: MedicineImagine - simply breathing into a machine to find out if you have renal disease, cystic fibrosis, asthma, and maybe other diseases as well.
A new breath analysis machine is going on trial in a clinical environment for the first time, and uses a revolutionary technique known as SIFT-MS, which works by measuring trace gases or metabolites present in the breath.
Good idea - and the concept has already been applied successfully in lung cancer with a sensitivity of 90% and a specificity of 83%.
But the machine really isn't all that special, after all - even a dog can do it.
