What Islam says on religious freedom

I find that having to address this issue in the 21st century, even more - the fact that it is a serious concern, is a repulsive disgrace and a clear indication of the spiritual and moral decline of civilizations, both East and West.

How can a supposedly rational human being think this way:

But one who is born as a Muslim and then apostates (Murtad Fitri) he is to be killed even if he repents. His repentance might be accepted by Allãh but he still has to go through the punishment prescribed for his treason in this world
... let alone, seriously entertain justifying it?

If anyone can offer a responsible, serious, responsible, intelligent, and qualified response, please consider this an open thread!
