Those Muhammad Cartoons - More on the story that just won't die!

Topics: Understanding Islam

Of course we're referring to those Danish cartoons (which were then supplemented by the instigating clerics), you know, the ones that have been the subject of global riots, often referred to as the "cartoon jihad".

Now we hear from The Egyptian Sandmonkey that The Syndicate of Egyptian cartoonists have decided that they would respond to the danish cartoons by making their own cartoons on (their version of) what happend. They were done - "as a response to those who fell under the thrall of racism, forgery and crime", and were printed in a 2 page spread in Al Fagr newspaper, probably as a way to redeem the fact that they were the ones who first published the danish cartoons last October.

He has translated all of them and shows them here, with commentary.

Note the heavy anti-semetic undertones present in some of them. As for racism, and for that matter false facts, it's more a case of the pot calling the kettle black.

Will they ever let it go and get a life? Hey guys, the Danish cartoons were pure satire in the Danish tradition of political and societal satire - humorous, a bit sticky, yes, but nothing like we're seeing here and certainly nothing deserving of such a nutty response such as we've seen by much of the Islamic world.

Like Flemming Rose, cultural editor of Denmark's largest newspaper, said to the BBC: " ... in Denmark we do have a tradition of satire and humor, some of the cartoonists made satirical cartoons. But that's what we do with Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ, that's what we do with other religions," ...

In other words, satire is poked at all religions - so one has to ask why is it that Islamists and their ilk are so sensitive, and does it have anything to do with an inability to cope in a modern democratic society. The rest of the world, modern Muslims included - minus of course, the Islamists and fanatical Muslims that are had and are having a fit over the cartoons, understand these things and take them in stride, being secure and comfortable in their faith and in their fellow man.
