Howard Dean to the Religious Community: Back-Off

Topics: Political News and commentaries

Dean made what sounds like a threat in an interview with the Christian Science Monitor:

"The religious community has to decide whether they want to be tax exempt or involved in politics." - Howard Dean
The assertion that the religious community should be excluded from the political arena would have been a shock to our Founding Fathers and is certainly repugnant to virtually every American.

However, Dean tailors his message to the audience present and doesn't seem to have a problem with the religious, as long as they support him. He's even integrated Biblical language to support his campaign:

Dean declared that though the Democrats have tried to follow maybe 25 of the 27 main values of the New Testament, they have been poor at communicating this story. Invoking God, Dean declared, "Lord, family values--how could we possibly lose! We are the party of family values!"
