U.S. Hiring Hong Kong Co. to Scan Nukes (Alternate title - U.S. hiring fox to guard hen house)
Topics: Political News and commentariesThe Democrats are going to have another field day with this one. Sometimes I think President Bush just gets a kick out of tweeking the Dems into one fray after another.
Here we are having just gone through an OK Corral-style shootout over port security, and now we have the Bush administration hiring a Hong Kong conglomerate to help detect nuclear materials inside cargo passing through the Bahamas, just 65 miles from the U.S. coast, to the United States and elsewhere. And it's a no-bid contract with Hutchison Whampoa Ltd. whose billionaire chairman, Li Ka-Shing, has substantial business ties to China's government and is close to a lot of senior leaders of the Chinese government and the Chinese Communist Party.
Wasn't it only a few years ago that the Bush administration effectively blocked a Hutchison subsidiary from buying part of a bankrupt U.S. telecommunications company, Global Crossing Ltd. (GLBC), on national security grounds?
For a real wakeup call on Mr. Li Ka-shing and why we should have serious reservations about doing business with the guy, take a look at this excerpt:

I'm anxious to hear about how we are all going to be safer and sleep better at night, knowing that the Chinese Communists are watching over the security and screening of nuclear weapons heading into our neighborhoods from the Middle East, courtesy of all those Islamic terrorists and their state sponsors, Iran, Syria, and even Pakistan (remember Ali Khan?)!
