Rumour and fear hinder the effort to eradicate Polio
Topics: Health IssuesThe push to eradicate polio in third world countries has been coming to a slow grinding halt. The aim was to eradicate polio by the year 2000 but 6 years has passed since the deadline with no sign of a complete eradication of the disease. Whilst there has been a lot of progress, in third world countries such as India and Nigeria the effort is being slowed down as a result of false rumours such as: the vaccine is really an attempt to prevent Islamic girls from having babies.
At the same time, the governments in these third world countries are also pulling out of the effort to ensure that all children are being vaccinated against this disease.
