Opening Of Rafah Crossing - 'Window of Opportunity' or Door to More War'? Abbas Now Says al Qaeda In GazaTopics: Middle East News and Perspectives
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said in an interview published yesterday that Al Qaeda cells are operating in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. According to the Israeli Defense Ministry, members of the terrorist group have been dected entering Gaza through the Rafah crossing on the Egyptian border, which was opened in November under pressure from Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
It appears that every time a window is opened by Isreael in the interest of peace, the Palestinians and their terrorist brothers use it as a door for war.
At the opening ceremony for the opening of the Rafah crossing, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said he was confident that the newly open border was the first step toward the establishment of an independent state. At the time Sharon saw it as a step toward stabilizing the situation and building on it; Netanyahu saw it as a huge strategic mistake, creating a conduit for the flow of terrorist weapons (and of course - terrorists).
Sharon also saw the Rafah crossing as a test case; if it succeeded, Israel would be ready to go further.
To that regard, it is most obviously a test that the Palestinians have miserably failed.
