Muslims ask French to cancel 1741 play by Voltaire

Topics: Understanding Islam

There comes a time when we in the West have to simply say that things have gone way too far, and that Muslims are going to just have to get a life, or get a hat - and get out of Dodge! You're not going to believe this!

Voltaire, an 18th-century philosopher, famously said, "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." Now, 265 years later, in a letter to the mayor of Saint-Genis-Pouilly, four Islamic activists demanded that his play, "Fanaticism, or Mahomet the Prophet," which uses the founder of Islam to lampoon all forms of religious frenzy and intolerance, not be read - saying it was an "insult to the entire Muslim community."

Incredibly, Muslims not only want to censor criticism of Islam and Muhammad; they want the West to forget that such criticism has ever been made in history.

My personal feeling on this is that if indeed that's the position of the "entire Muslim community," then be damned with the entire Muslim community.

After reading the article, be sure and watch the video of what Wafa Sultan has to say about the clash we are witnessing around the world, what she describes as being not a clash of religions, or a clash of civilizations, rather a clash between two opposites, between two eras (from an earlier post today):

It is a clash between a mentality that belongs to the Middle Ages and another mentality that belongs to the 21st century. It is a clash between civilization and backwardness, between the civilized and the primitive, between barbarity and rationality. It is a clash between freedom and oppression, between democracy and dictatorship. It is a clash between human rights, on the one hand, and the violation of these rights, on other hand. It is a clash between those who treat women like beasts, and those who treat them like human beings. What we see today is not a clash of civilizations. Civilizations do not clash, but compete.
