Israeli Police on High Alert in Central Israel in Light of Terror Warning
Topics: Middle East News and Perspectives
My interest in this story, besides the obvious implications involved with ten Palestinian suicidal terrorists being caught in the center of Israel, is the location of the incident - I've been through the area of Latrun many times.
After a dramatic high-speed chase on a major highway, Israeli forces on Tuesday stopped a van transporting a group of Palestinians who were carrying explosives meant for a bombing in the center of the country, police said. This story comes as we learn that the European Union has handed over 64m euros (£44m) in aid to the Palestinians, supposedly to help the "poorest" among them. That's a lot of ten-man vans loaded down with explosives, on the roads of Israel. The van, which was carrying 5 kilograms (11 pounds) of explosives, was stopped near Latrun, a town midway between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, police said. The 10 men inside the vehicle were taken for questioning.
Jerusalem police spokesman Shmuel Ben-Ruby said the men intended to plant a bomb in central Israel. Security officials said the suspects were carrying an explosives belt, commonly used by Palestinian suicide bombers.
And as though Palestinian suicide terrorists riding through country with explosive laden vans isn't enough to worry about, Israel's Agriculture Ministry confirmed Monday that the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu had spread to three locations in the Holy Land.
