Indonesia protested against Mohammed cartoons, but says nothing about this?
Topics: Understanding IslamTalk about the double standards of the Indonesians with regard to the publishing of cartoons. It seems that in Indonesia one must protest over cartoons that have not even been viewed to see if they really did mock Islam, but it is ok to publish some very disgusting cartoons of Australian Prime Minister John Howard and Alexander Downer as fornicating dingoes (full cartoon below in extended post).
There is a bit of history that has led to this latest duplicity of the Indonesian government with regard to their dealings with foreign governments. In this case, the Australian embassy in Papua New Guinea has granted visas (and asylum?) to approximately 20 people from the region. These people have come from the Indonesian side of the border, and the people in question have tried to escape from the Indonesian tyranny in the region. The Indonesians are upset with the Australians because of the stand that has been taken. It is more than likely that they wil not do any deals that will see the Bali 9 and Chapelle Corby released from prison (these cases are further evidence of Indonesian hypocrisy) because of this incident. However, the publishing of the cartoon is an absolute outrage, especially in light of the hullabaloo over the alleged Mohammed depictions that were absolutely innocent in comparison to what they have printed.
The real hypocrisy of the Indonesians happens to be the way in which they have been working out how to release the terrorists who planned the Bali bombings that killed more than 200 foreign tourists - the majority of the tourists killed in this way were Australians. The master mind of these bombings, a radical Muslim imam from Yemen, will be released from prison in a very short time. It is incredible to think how he can get away with plotting to murder so many people, yet the Australians who have foolishly dabbled in the drug trade (keeping in mind that Chapelle Corby seems to be innocent), it makes no sense that the punishment and the intent to carry out the punishment in the case of drug trafficking does not fit the crime.
Maybe Australians need to take to the streets in protest at this particular form of insult, but I know that this willl not happen. It has taken the protests of the ALP (the Australian oppostion) to even find out the the Indonesians have behaved in such a hypocritical way.
