Hanky-Panky A No-Go Under Islamic Law

Topics: Understanding Islam

A former leading member of the Aceh separatist movement, GAM (Gerakan Aceh Merdeka), and a French aid worker have been arrested by the "religious police" for breaking the province's strict Islamic law prohibiting unrelated men and women being alone together. Amni bin Ahmad Marzuk, a former GAM peace negotiator, faces up to nine strokes of the cane and a fine if convicted by the Bandah Aceh Sharia Court. According to the police, the couple were caught together in a parked car at around midnight by local residents who handed them over to the police.

I'm willing to bet that there will be no more hanky-panky for Amni! One never knows where those "religious police" and their spies may be lurking.

BTW, not all Muslims would agree with the imposition of Islamic law, there are indeed secular Muslims, even secular imams, although perhaps not many. One such imam is French and proud to be both Muslim and French. He considers himself a forerunner of a modern, liberal, apolitical Islam - an Islam he reckons will take root this century in Europe and beyond.

Interestingly, Boubakeur does not believe in a clash of civilizations pitting Islam against the West. Rather, he sees a battle playing out among European Muslims, between those willing to adopt Western values and those hostile to assimilation. His attire is Western, his face clean-shaven. His secretary in the front office does not wear a head scarf. He cites Voltaire, speaks German and holds France's highest honor, the Légion d'Honneur. He is what the newspaper Le Monde last month dubbed "the ideal Muslim." However, not all Muslims agree with Boubakeur, and in fact, there are many who believe him to be the antithesis of a Muslim representative.

But if there's one Boubakeur, there's got to be more.
