Feingold's Leap: Few Willing To Follow Him Off Cliff

Topics: Political News and commentaries

D8GB0M1O0_preview.jpegAs Democrats began to distance themselves Monday from Wisconsin Sen. Russell Feingold's effort to censure President Bush over domestic spying, it appears that Feingold's leap off the cliff of sanity and reason into the abyss of alienating swing voters will draw little to no support from fellow Democrats. One major exception, he's certain to win the endorsement of Cindy Sheehan.

One can understand Republicans salivating over the question, "Will Democrats Stand With Feingold's Soft On Terror Crusade?" since a majority of Americans support President Bush's terrorist surveillance program.

(...) Sen. John Warner (R-VA): "[Sen. Feingold's] admitted he's running for president. And this was political grandstanding ... the worst type of political grandstanding." (CNN's "Late Edition," 3/12/06)

(...) Warner: "[I] was among those ... that said we should legislate on this issue, bring clarity to it, so, the president is not perceived as breaking the law. I don't think he has. But that was political grandstanding. And it tends to weaken our president." (CNN's "Late Edition," 3/12/06)

(...) An ABC News/Washington Post Poll, Found A Majority Of Americans Consider Wiretapping Telephone Calls And Emails Without Court Approval An Acceptable Way For The Federal Government To Investigate Terrorism. (ABC News/Washington Post Poll, 1,000 Adults Nationwide, Conducted March 2-5, 2006, Margin Of Error +/- 3%)

(...) The Same Poll Found That 62% Of Americans Believe The FBI Should Retain Additional Authority In Areas Like Surveillance, Wiretaps And Obtaining Records In Terrorism Investigations. (ABC News/Washington Post Poll, 1,000 Adults Nationwide, Conducted March 2-5, 2006, Margin Of Error +/- 3%)

And as expected, the following statement was released by the Republican National Committee:
"Sen. Feingold's out of touch attack demonstrates, once again, that Democrats are willing to play politics with the most important issue facing the American people. Attempting to harness angry partisanship for short-term political gain does nothing to make America safer and everything to detract from President Bush's continued efforts to aggressively fight the War on Terror. Not only is Senator Feingold's approach a disservice to those who work tirelessly to protect America, it sends the wrong message to our enemies." -Tracey Schmitt, RNC Press Secretary
And that's my sentiments, exactly! So now, Feingold has got himself in Cheney's sights (and we all know that's a dangerous place to be - no more hunting jokes, please).

BTW, if you're looking for a pro-Feingold anti-Bush piece, as always you have to look no further than CBS News: "Will Russ Feingold Stand Alone Again?" And then there's always a moonbat from the Huffington Post willing to support anything left of Left and bad for America!

Beware any presidential aspirant who puts his or her overweening personal ambition first. Like Senator Russ Feingold, Democrat of Wisconsin. In his zeal to win the Democrats' 2008 presidential nomination, he just moved on from decrying, underminining and delaying the extension of The Patriot Act (at last extended, with limited damage) to sanctimoniously calling for the censure of President Bush for protecting America from terrorist attacks by authorizing warrantless secret surveillance of international telephone calls reasonably believed to be Al Qaeda-related and keeping his terrorist surveillance program secret. Some people will do just about anything to win Cindy Sheehan's endorsement.
