Clinical Trial Highlights Challenges of Developing Bird Flu Vaccine

Doctors say the trial of the H5N1 flu vaccine is a first step in preparing the country for a devastating pandemic that could kill as many as 2 million Americans, but it also reveals how vulnerable the nation is, at least in the near future.(...) "Basically, it's back to the drawing board," said Gregory Poland, a professor of medicine and infectious disease at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Rochester, Minn. "We've been puttering around since 1997 (when the first H5N1 human cases emerged) and there still is not a viable (vaccine) candidate."
