Call for a UN of religions

Topics: Faith

Yona Metzger, the Chief Rabbi of Israel, has called for a 'UN of religions' at a peace conference sponsored by the Spanish government in Madrid.

In what must be seen as a refreshing change in attitude, the rabbis and imams present at this conference have vocalised a number of criticisms that need to be borne by each side of the divide, not only in Israel or elsewhere. For example Rabbi Metzger told the imams that it is time that they stood up to Osama Bin Laden.

There must be a change in direction, not just from the imams within Islam but also amongst the Jews and Christians. There is a real need for all groups to come together and to work towards a common goal of restoring peace in the world.

On the one hand, the politicians are failing because they are so hung up with their agendas. On another, Christians and Jews aren't interested in a theocracy. So, if reform minded Muslims who are willing to see Muslims live as a membesr of a diverse society will speak out in favor of us all living together under secular law instead of Islamic law, perhaps real change can occur.

UN of religions? I call it a great idea!
