al-Qaeda's Next Target - Israel

Topics: Terrorism

As was recognized back in 2002 when al-Qaeda conducted the double attack on Israelis in Kenya, and also after the attacks in Egypt's Sinai peninsula in 2004, just for starters (let's not forget the December 2005 rocket attacks from Lebanon), al-Qaeda has had it's sights on Israel for quite a while. Even from within Israel, there was a group of five Israeli Arabs that were indicted in March 2005 for planning a series of terrorist attacks against their Jewish countrymen to gain the approval of Al Qaeda.

Now there are more signs that Al Qaeda terrorists are setting their sights on Israel, but now into Israel itself and the Palestinian Arab territories, as their next jihad battleground:

Israel has indicted two West Bank terrorists for Al Qaeda membership, Egypt arrested operatives trying to cross into Israel, and a Palestinian Arab security official has acknowledged Al Qaeda is "organizing cells and gathering supporters."

Al Qaeda's inroads are still preliminary, but officials fear a doomsday scenario if it takes root.

Palestinian Arabs in the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, and Lebanon have established contacts with Al Qaeda followers linked to the leader of Al Qaeda in Iraq, Abu Musab al- Zarqawi, according to two Israeli officials.

Mr. (sic - read as murdering terrorist thug-in-chief) al-Zarqawi has established footholds in the countries neighboring Israel - Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, and Jordan - and is interested in bringing his fight to Israel, too, the officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity because Israel does not want to identify those involved in the issue.

Earlier this month even Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas spoke of a suspected Al Qaeda presence in the Palestinian territories, but his statements met only suspicion of political motives as Hamas worked to form a government in the aftermath of its victory in the legislative elections. The London-based Al Hayat quoted Abbas on March 2 as saying that he was "very worried over intelligence information that the organization is making a presence in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip".

At the time and as expected, the Palestinians blamed the evil Joooz - accusing Al Qaeda of being nothing more than a tool in the hands of the Israeli secret service to assist Israeli interests and bring as much harm as possible to the Palestinian cause.
