A struggle for Palestinian society
Topics: Middle East News and PerspectivesYesterday, the dream of many Palestinians and the nightmare of many others materialized when a Hamas majority in the Palestinian Legislative Council granted a vote of confidence to a Hamas government that is likely to lead the Palestinian polity for the next four years. This new reality has many significant implications for all aspects of life for Palestinians as well as for their regional and international relations, among them, that at least for now and in the forseeable future, Palestinian society will remain in the Hamas mindset of the dark ages, and has little hope of joining the modern world.
Since Hamas is an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood movement that has a habit of focusing on the need to change the mentality, ideology, way of thinking and way of life of individuals, as well as communities and society at large, and Hamas has always believed that the successful pursuit of national aspirations can only be undertaken once a "real Islamic society" is in place, count on the dreams of those many Palestinians going nowhere...
Power is not going to moderate Hamas, and as of 54 minutes ago it's already clear that Hamas has no intention on recognizing Israel's right to exist:
A Hamas-dominated Palestinian parliament approved the Islamic militant group's cabinet and program on Tuesday, clearing the way for it to take control of the government two months after its shock election victory.Such behavior is more characteristic of children living in the dark ages than in a society of the 21st century. And so it will be as long the Palestinians and Hamas continue to see themselves in a cosmological conflict with Israel and with Jews worldwide, rooted within theological frames and informed by fantasy.Chanting "God is Greatest" after the 71-to-36 vote, Hamas lawmakers hugged and kissed a teary-eyed Ismail Haniyeh, the incoming Palestinian prime minister, who vowed not to abandon the fight against Israel.
"The Koran is our constitution, Jihad is our way, and death for the sake of God is our highest aspiration," Hamas lawmaker Hamed Bitawi said.
It's about time we recognize that no basis exists for assuming that the Islamist movement within Palestinian society, now led by Hamas, is in any way ready to meet the minimal conditions for peace set forth by Israel and the world community - an end to terrorism, recognition of Israel, and acceptance of previous agreements between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.
In short, the "road map to peace" can now be recognized as the circular function that it was before it ever began - we've simply repeated all of the previous attempts to convince a people that worship death to embrace life and peace along with it. It's time to abandon such exercises in futility, and look for a new process, one that begins with what for now seems impossible - a Palestinian society more in tune with the 21st century than the dark ages of radical Islamic thought, with a focus on economic issues and real education - not Islamist indoctrination, on living with their neighbor in peace, instead of cosmological fantasies of an Islamist caliphate. Given where Hamas and the Palestinians are today, the potential for such a begining appears distant.
