The Dark Side of Valentine's Day

Topics: Culture and Society

For millions of Americans couples, Valentines Day is a highly anticipated time to express and celebrate their mutual love and committment. But for detective agencies across the United States, the romantic holiday is a boon for business as it is the ideal time for a spouse to catch a cheating mate.

"Valentine's Day is the biggest day of the year for private investigators," Tony Delorenzo, of Private Detectives of America, a New Jersey-based company, told AFP.

"This year we're doing surveillance Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday because if somebody has a lover it will be on one of those days to catch him."

In fact, detective agencies are overloaded this time of year with appeals by men and women seeking to find out whether their partner is unfaithful.

While scandalously interesting, the article reveals a dark side of Valentine's Day for so many who have given their hearts and lives to another only to have their love betrayed and their vulnerability exposed. Unfortunately, the toll of unfaithfulness on the family is profound, considering the devastation to marriages and the fall-out suffered by young and impressionable lives.

My respect, admiration and appreciation grows each year for those who choose faithfulness over infidelity. For those who remain in this category, may you and your aficionado be filled with contentment and joy on Valentine's Day.
