students attempt to defy government protest ban in Lahore

Topics: Understanding Islam

Reuters reports that students who are members of Pakistan's Jamaat-e-Islami attempted to defy the ban on protest rallies in Lahore by marching yesterday. Police fired tear gas to disperse the crowd.

It is becoming increasingly obvious that the students, as well as members of the MMA are using the cartoons as a pretext to protest against the Pakistani government. The rallies have almost nothing to do with the cartoons. The students who managed to start marching prior to their dispersion were chanting "death to America" and "death to Denmark".

I doubt that these students have even seen the cartoons, because their protests are rather transparent. It is an opportunity to cause unrest and to make an attempt to overthrow the government by whipping up anti-government sentiment. Both the MMA and the Jamaat-e-Islami think that Musharraf is too friendly with the USA.

The arrests in Lahore are now well over 100 people. The MMA have tried to sneak their people into the province in order to stir up more trouble, but dawn raids tlushed them out, and they were arrested. Despite those arrests, the Jamaat-e-Islami were successful in at least getting the march under way.

Just like the Paris riots, there appears to be the usual Islamist forces and their agenda at play behind the scenes.
