On Selling America's Ports To Her Arab Enemies

Topics: War on Terror

Unless you've been hiding in a cave during the last week, you are aware that the debate over Dubai's taking over a number of US ports has inspired heated debate over homeland security, foreign control of ports, and the threat of terrorism. Republican governors are now threatening legal action to stop the takeover while Jimmy Carter now says he supports the administration on the approval of the takeover by the Dubai company. Before now, I was on the fence of the issue, leaning toward the side of caution that says hell no to Arabs running our ports.

However, now that I've heard that the lover of all that hates America - Jimmy Carter, is in favor of this, then I know for sure that the Bush administration is absolutely on the wrong side of the issue. And it looks like folks from both sides of the aisle are lining up to fight what just may be the dumbest move on the part of Whitehouse since the nomination of Harriet Myers for SCOTUS. Cal Thomas points out the bipartisanship of the issue in his Salt Lake Trib. piece:

In a rare display of bipartisanship, congressional Republicans and Democrats are forging an alliance to reverse the decision. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, has announced plans for her Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs to hold hearings. Sens. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., and Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J. -- both members of Collins' committee -- have raised concerns. New York's Democratic senators, Charles Schumer and Hillary Clinton, have also objected to the sale. Clinton and Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., expect to offer a bill to ban companies owned or controlled by foreign governments from acquiring U.S. port operations.

In the House, Reps. Chris Shays, R-Conn.; Mark Foley, R-Fla.; and Vito Fossella, R.-N.Y., are among those who want to know more about the sale. In a House speech, Foley said, ''The potential threat to our country is not imagined, it is real.''
As Thomas points out in his piece, Congress absolutely must stop this sale of American ports to foreign interests and, in an era of terrorism, prevent any more potential terrorist targets from falling into the hands of those who wish to destroy us.

Besides, if Jimmy Carter is for it, I'm most definately against it. If in doubt as to what's good for America, you can always use the "Jimmy test" to know how to come down on an issue of national importance.

As always, although I am most definately a moderate conservative, and usually vote Republican, when a Republican president is solidly wrong on an issue, it's up to his friends to tell him: George, you're dead wrong on this, and it's a very dumb idea. The Democrats have found an issue to make political hay with, and GW has handed it to them on a silver plate. I agree with Jonathon at "The Strong Conservative" on this, the Democrats are probably not really against the Arab takeover of our ports in principle, "but it does give them a great opportunity to act like they really care about national security after their spineless behavior on the Iraq War and War on Terror."

It makes the Dems look good on terrorism, when in fact they've done more to hurt America than they could undo in ten years, if they tried real hard, which they will not.
