Insanity - Nine Dead

At least nine people were dead and 55 injured after protesters tried to storm the Italian consulate in Benghazi on Friday, a consulate employee told Sky Italian television.

The protests were over cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad that appeared in a Danish newspaper.

BBC: Libya cartoon rally sparks clash - Italy's Ansa news agency said the rally had been a response to recent remarks by Italian minister Roberto Calderoli about the cartoons.

Calderoli had t-shirts made that are imprinted with the Mohammad cartoons - not the brightest move. "I have had T-shirts made with the cartoons that have upset Islam and I will start wearing them today," Ansa quoted Calderoli as saying. We covered the story here.

Libyans protesting the Prophet Mohammed cartoons set fire to the Italian consulate in Benghazi on Friday in a riot that left 11 people dead or wounded, Libyan security officials said.

Libyan state television showed a part of the consulate building on fire, and firefighters trying to extinguish it.

The Italian Foreign Ministry confirmed that the first floor of the building had been set on fire after the crowd charged into the grounds of the consulate late Friday. In a statement in Rome, the ministry said the consulate was being protected by Libyan security forces.
