Inciting the Violence - Cartoons and Islam
Topics: Understanding IslamAre the Muslim people of the world being manipulated to respond violently to cartoons which are critical of their prophet, Muhammad? Well, yes, there is little doubt that Those Lying Danish Imams had a role in the Planned Outrage which has led to widespread rioting, death and destruction. A National Review Editorial rightly concludes that the "outpouring" of Muslim wrath was the deliberate pouring of radical activists>. How many Danish flags are normally available in Gaza, or Jakarta?
And, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is now suggesting that governments are exploiting the instability of their Muslim populations to incite further violence:
WASHINGTON Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Wednesday accused Iran and Syria of deliberately seizing on the dispute over cartoons lampooning the Prophet Muhammad to incite violence, and a U.S. military official said several countries were trying to determine whether Islamic radicals were orchestrating anti-Western demonstrations. While the Imams may have lied to manufacture indignation and the governments of Iran and Syria may be encouraging the growth of violence as a power enhancement vehicle, there remains something to be said about the bankrupt worldview which is able to justify violence and anarchy in response to a cartoon and enables the widespread suppression of criticism through intimidation (as in "be quiet or I'll kill you").Speaking at the State Department, Rice said Iran and Syria appeared to have "gone out of their way to inflame sentiment and to use this to their own purposes." She added, "The world ought to call them on it."
One of the 12 Danish cartoonists whose caricatures of Islam have led to the violent protests has told a German newspaper he is distraught over the consequences and now faces at least two death threats. All the cartoonists have gone into hiding.
As George Neumayr writes (emphasis mine),
"Only radical Muslims would consider rioting a rational rebuttal to descriptions of Islam as violent. What other religious group riots or issues death threats after it is criticized? It is precisely because Christianity is so tame that Western liberals often feel safe to lampoon its history as violent. They wouldn't dare level similarly harsh criticism of Islam.Related: Don't Call us Violent (or We'll Kill You)One of the unstated reasons for hesitating before calling radical Islam violent -- the reason the fog of political correctness thickens around it -- is that it does contain elements of violence. Western society falls silent lest its criticism of Islam result in an explosion of anger validating the criticism. "
(...) Yes, crude caricatures of Islam are improper. Yes, multitudes of Muslims are peace-loving and decent. But it is hard not to notice that Islamic protests whipped up by militants such as this one are more opportunistic than sincere, and that they are designed to stifle legitimate criticism of radical Islam's undeniably violent history and designs -- criticism that receives fresh evidence from the wildly intemperate anger it stokes.
