Bay Area Muslims Urge Restraint Over Muhammad Cartoons

Topics: Understanding Islam

While we've been rather hard on the Muslims that have been rioting and committing acts of violence throughout Europe and the Middle East, we've been just as quick to note proper restraint when and where it has occurred, such as with Canadian Muslims who have said that the Cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad as a terrorist are deeply offensive, but so is the violent reaction to the drawings from Islamic extremists.

And Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, Iraq's leading Shiite cleric, who said:

"We strongly denounce and condemn" the caricatures...

... he also suggested that extremists responsible for suicide attacks and acts of terrorism were partly responsible for tarnishing the image of Islam. "Enemies have exploited this ... to spread their poison and revive their old hatreds with new methods and mechanisms" ...

Now SF Gate reports that Bay Area Muslims expressed disappointment and anger Friday over Danish newspaper cartoons that featured negative images of the Prophet Muhammad, but vowed to remain peaceful despite hostile protests in other parts of the world.

Finally, we are begining to hear more voices of reason from the Muslim community. Not yet enough to quell the vast number of rioting Muslims throughout the world, people who apparently have no comprehension of the concept of free speech, and who believe that non-Muslims should believe as Muslims do, that Muhammad and Islam is deserving of some special accomodation that excludes the exercise of free speech, one not afforded to Jesus Christ or Christians. That dog isn't going to hunt in the West!
